Apparently there's a Nigerian connection, probably northern Nigerian seeing as the south is mainly Christian. Northern Nigeria is a place of wild beauty, has a fascinating history and most people there are actually very welcoming. Islam brought stability, literacy and rule of law in the past, under Usman dan Fodio and his son Mohammed Bello, who were the rulers of the Sokoto caliphate, a federation of emirates in the north before colonial times. Some of the emirates would have been recognisable to us as democracies, most were stable and quite wealthy. But of course there is a darker side to it all. There are also some fundamentalist loons there and the place has been plagued by terrorism since the early 1970s, allegedly funded by money from Saudi Arabia. Some of the loons refer back to the 'glorious' Sokoto caliphate as if they were worthy of it; they aren't. But then, I doubt that those two idiots in Woolwich know the first thing about the history of Islam in West Africa.

Well, I wouldn't say those guys are entirely healthy in the upstairs department. Perhaps it's the combination of radical Islam and mental problems. We all know muslims who wouldn't consider doing this, and we all know slightly loony people who wouldn't do something like this. Maybe the combination is the problem.
