I never said it was only for people who practice a religion - there is no point lying to make your point here.Originally posted by VectraMan View PostSo who is marriage for? You say it's a holy institution, which suggests you think it's only for people that practice a religion. Yet marriages have been being performed in registry offices for a long long time and for people with no religious convictions whatsoever, not to mention whilst sky diving naked (I saw it on telly so it must be true).
What I said is that many people who have some kind of faith still view it as a holy institution and one that is uniquely between a man and a woman. I totally respect whatever type of ceremony/ritual that involves for whoever it is.
I agree that if your outlook is such that all us humans are just pure animals (agree our physical make-up is animal) and we produced the concept of marriage then there is no need to limit it to man and woman. Actually there is no need to limit it in any way or form - let's just open up the whole thing and let anybody define it however they want. Why does it even matter if we are all animals?
Edit: Marriage in that case should be opened up to include incest, other animals, plants, objects and whatever other object somebody should want to "Marry".Last edited by NorthWestPerm2Contr; 21 May 2013, 14:13.Comment

Your making the assumption that Judaism/Christianity were the first religions....Originally posted by Old Greg View PostMarriage certainly predates Judaeo-Christianity.Comment

While I respect Roman Catholic view on marriage - it is a detail I don't agree with. But at the very least we can all come to a common basis for marriage which is that it is between a man and a woman and involves some kind of commitment.Originally posted by Old Greg View PostRoman Catholics don't believe marriage is for people who have previously been married.
You object to the idea that marriage is for everybody, so is marriage for people who have previously been married?Comment

But we have changed marriage with the introduction of divorce. Presumably that was a mistake because it was changing the fundamental nature of marriage? Or was that change OK, but no more changes allowed?Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostWhile I respect Roman Catholic view on marriage - it is a detail I don't agree with. What about the change from polygamy to monogamy? Didn't Solomon have 1000 wives? Was that change OK?Comment

Don't presume to speak on my behalf.Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostOnly to you - the idea of marrying your same sex seems just as foreign to most people....Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

Wikipedia calls you a liar!Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostDid you not read what I said? the basic principle is that it is between a man and a woman - this is agreed upon by all religions/faiths.
Various faith communities around the world support allowing same-sex couples to marry and/or conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies; for example: Quakers, American Episcopalians, the Metropolitan Community Church, the United Church of Christ, the United Church of Canada, Buddhism in Australia, Reform and Conservative Jews, Wiccans, Druids, Unitarian Universalists, and Native American religions with a two-spirit tradition, as well as various progressive and modern Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jewish groups and various minor religions and other denominations
