Wifey uses an XC90 and loves it for carting the kids/dog around.

Am looking at a 530D myself at the moment as my contractor banger (volvo) is on its last legs.

      We know sas, we know.
Back when my old man had a 1999 E-Class he had endless problems - others I know reported similar issues. I know this continued to about 2005ish and I have heard things are better now..... It's just that damage in confidence which would worry me when it comes to buying one. I am hoping to get a new car within the next year and I think it will be between a BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 series and an E Class - if I get more confirmations that MB have sorted out their issues then I may well go for one.....

I quite like the A4 and C class estates I've had as rentals, but might be a bit small for a family holiday unless you had a roofbox. I had a VW suv thing recently which was quite good.

          R-Class Merc?

7 seats, bags of room, classy, quick.

£15k will get you a 4 yo low miler.

Edit: Just realised that's what OH mentioned.

Yep, although I have had a 2004 e-class saloon for 4 years and it's been problem free all the way, with 200,000 kms on the clock. Maybe the first owner solved the probs under guarantee. That's why I think an e-class estate might be right for me, but worth checking the BMW too as another option.

MB scares me with things such as a £1200 bill to fit a plastic clip when the gear shift gets jammed due to a design fault.

I'm a bit late to the party here, but I've also been looking for an estate for about 15K.

At the moment it looks like an Audi A6 diesel, probably 2010, reasonable mileage. The main reasons for me are that there seem to be quite a few around at car supermarkets, you get sat nav, bluetooth, parking sensors, etc all included. lower tax than my current old Citroen C4, same or lower insurance, and better mpg, while being an overall better car.

Hope this is just a blip but my E220 coupé -less than a year old and only 8000 on the clock- suffered a gearbox malfunction this week pulled over collect passenger - pulled out and the autobox wouldn't change up out of first - had to put it in manual mode and used the flappy paddle things to change up!

A reboot - i.e. turning ignition off and on again and it's not happened since - hopefully not a sign of things to come... but service is due so I'll mention to the garage - other than that it's a lovely car
