It's a fine line because we need a free press. The problem is that the Daily Wail doesn't care if it's wrong, all it cares about is selling papers. The editor of the paper should have some pressure brought on him when he is allowing his journalists to sprout this crap simply because it sells papers. Even now that people can now see how harmful their misguided campaigns were, they still assert that they were right to "raise concerns".Originally posted by doodab View PostI think there is an argument that journalists writing on certain matters have a duty of care and should be liable to criminal prosecution for willful distortion of facts.
The judge was simply repeating what the health professionals presented to him in evidence, he wasn't making his own assertion.Originally posted by vetran View Postso one minute only health professionals and gifted statisticians can make such judgements then next we accept the pronouncements of senile old judges? Do try to be consistent on team MMR.
Well, 95% of the target population had the MMR. What's so special about the kooky Daily Mail readers that they need some extra mollycoddling to persuade them that the NHS, CDC, WHO and just about every other scientific body in the developed world thinks it's the right thing to do? Why should the government spend a whole ton of taxpayer's money trying to persuade them? It will just give the Hate Mail an excuse to run a screaming headline about the "nanny state" so it's a no win situation for the NHS isn't it?Originally posted by vetran View PostNo actually he is saying if you force a population to do something instead of convincing them its likely they will disobey. He said this before the government of the time rail-roaded people into the MMR by removing the single vaccine and viciously suppressing anyone who raised questions. Strangely he was proven right, we are now seeing the result.
As for the "choice" angle, imagine a parent has brought the kids to get their immunisations. There is a choice of them having 2 shots of the MMR or 6 shots of the single vaccine. Now which one do they take? It's a no brainer isn't it. They take the one that works best and causes the least pain which is the MMR. From the NHS point of view it works better because more people will take up the vaccine and there is less chance of someone saying they'll have measles but not the other two. Take the whole lot and be done with it.
Yes, they are a business but drug companies have very strict ethical standards that they abide by.Originally posted by vetran View PostMr Hitchens has a name for himself (if somewhat right wing), yes he has to sell papers, drug companies have to sell vaccines and health authorities have to cut costs and meet targets.
The NHS wants to provide the best healthcare they can at the lowest cost to the tax payer. They also have very strict ethical standards to abide by.
The tabloids don't care if they are wrong so long as they are selling papers.

Well.Originally posted by Wanderer View PostIt's too bad we can't jail journalists for doing the same thing....
we expect journalists to lie like turds in a bucket. and politicians.
Its part of growing up to learn that the police and the judges might be a bit unethical. Then the clergy are often bum busters, and that the bosses of charities get six figures a year.
Then we learn that the voting on big brother might be a bit ropey.
But there are some professions that we always expect to be pure, like scientists. it comes as a bit of a shock(\__/)
