Just don't see a way back from this without at least 1 nuke getting lobbed.

Scenario a) North Korea backs down. For this to happen the yanks would have to come off the sanctions a bit. They're unlikely to do that unless the NKs give them something in return, like say shutting down that reactor they just sparked up. Probability <1%

Scenario b) china steps in and tells America to back off. America would lose face and this would give NK license to do as much sabre rattling as they like cos big brother China has their backs. Kicking the can down the road as it will just come to a head again. America would come back with a un mandate and go piling in. <1%

Scenario c) NK lobs a nuke at SK. China gives them a ticking off. US stays out of it. Peace is restored without NK losing face. 50/50.

Scenario d) EMP from space cripples US. Markets plunge on dollar devaluation. Chaos the world over. Millions die from water shortage in the US. <0.0000001%

The public statements of the physicists and engineers working in the EMP field tend to emphasize the importance of making electronic equipment and electrical components resistant to EMP — and of keeping adequate spare parts on hand, and in the proper location, to enable prompt repairs to be made.
        Oh Dear(tm).
But on the plus side, in relation to pylon cables, wouldn't an EMP simply trip a load of breakers which could then simply be reset in the power station or substations? Depends on the type of breakers I suppose.

It's tempting to think all this has long since been thought through and adequately catered for; but I wouldn't bet on that. Even if it has, the precautions have probably been neglected and forgotten about since the end of the Cold War.

Yes that's right. But the highly sophisticated computing equipment that manages PF correction, load balancing, phase matching would be fried to a crisp.

Or there is an agreement done behind the scenes, as is always done, allowing everyone to save face. 99.9%

The US ,Japan and South Korea agree to relax sanctions and to allow that the North Korean missiles are not illegal, The North Koreans agree to stop testing missiles over Japan and to stop testing nukes.
The fat boy gets the bullet and diplomatic relations are opened between Japan and North Korea

I'll have a guess as to where they're hiding.

                    Underwater.
