JL is, IMO, an object lesson in retail done right and how to run a business. Not the cheapest but good value, I have never bought something from John Lewis, got it home and thought "my god, this is a piece of crap" and I've often had some fantastic bargains in their sales. They treat their staff well, and it says something that they are growing while high street shops are closing down left, right and centre, and also that Waitrose haven't been dragged into this whole horsemeat business.
