Actually, without checking one of the on-line calculators, I think 55" is about optimum if watching HD from about 8 feet. You will not be able to see the pixels. Those who sit further away need a bigger set.

Not sure I see the point of 4K. It won't look any sharper at HD viewing distances, and I can't see that you want a wider field of view than HD gives. I mean, 4K would, I guess, allow you to watch a 55" from 4 feet, without seeing pixels, but wouldn't each side of the screen then be disappearing beyond your peripheral vision?

      37" is 8ft for HD.

55" is 12ft for HD and 15ft if you want to watch SD.

Got a nice 60" LG plasma from john lewis a few months ago for £1000. 3D, smart Tv, full monty.

Found it cheaper in some manky shop/website and they did a price match. So I get 5 yr warranty too. result.

I presume the 4k stuff will be incredibly expensive for the first year once it comes out?
Yes, but don't forget you can expense it. And if it's over 2K, claim back the VAT too.

If its under 2k you can purchase other items (dvds, washing machines) to take you over that all important barrier.

4k TV is only just starting to trickle down to the very top end. I don't think we're expecting it to be commonplace for several years... either wait 2 years or just buy a decent regular HD TV now.
