What if your company did a 2e2 on you? This behaviour isn't rare any more and the administrators encourage the staff to claim the dole. Or haven't you been watching/reading the news.
Well I never rested on my morals "that job is not for me" type stuff.

If you are unemployed get a job, do not sit about for more than 10 years reading books from the Library expecting the state to pick you up.

Thanks, I'll pass on that one.

      Edit:

I'm sitting here smiling. I was about 8 years old when we drove from Cape Town to Knysna. There was a big sign beside the road: 'Danger Elephants / Gevaar Olifante'. I remember a great photo of my dad doing a (child friendly!) elephant impression from behind that sign. We then drove on to Addo - a big elephant reserve place. My dad took a cine film of an elephant having a tulip. I've no idea how many times that film was subsequently played backwards!

no one is doubting your work ethic, or your broad experience. It's admirable in my opinion

Done my time not signing on.

          Nothing to feel sorry.
And circumstances are the same now as when you and I were out there? Get a fckin grip and stop being a knob. I know a 21 year old guy with a degree had a 3 hour interview to get a job a Pizza Hut and failed, not going to go into all the HR tulipe that had to be put up with.

Life has changed big time. Try being a youngster now, the world is not yer oister anymore.

You are on the wrong place if you plead for the out of work, this 'community' has worked hard for qualifications to enter into this line of work and refuse to take on 'workers rights' despite what the HRMC tell us.
I worked hard for my qualifications too, thanks. I am not the only person on here to realise we are all a few bad decisions from poverty. Even the market for IT contractors can go downhill, I understand. It is nothing to do with workers rights,I just think to stigmatise everyone who is unemployed in one of the longest recessions we've ever had isnt helpful or necessary.

Agree - at 17 I was hopeless and clueless, but got a break. Today, the hopeless and clueless don't stand a chance.

A bum is a bum. no matter how long the recession.
Luckily there are few of those around, but there are some. These cards wont work, for various reasons, but lets accept the fact that ther are a few gits out there who need hammering, and young unmarried mothers are a big and growing problem

Are they a growing problem? Are there more now than there were in say the 80s?

If being a single parent is a 'lifestyle choice' it's a feckin' hard one, and possibly a reflection of the general hopelessness that is endemic in the less educated girls of today's teenage generation.

I dont disagree, actually. But the point remains, why should everyone who has lost their job be infantilised as incapable of budgetting for themselves. Treat people as children and they tend to behave like it.

People who post on here have got marketable skills, yes we all worked hard for them etc. If next financial year there are big cuts in the budgets that currently pay my wages I will just be another disposable 50 something who no one needs. There will be thousands younger who will look better bets for jobs in shops and offices and care homes than me. My dad sold oil in the 70s and 80s. He worked hard and did well, but part of doing well was the demand for oil. We all tend to put our successes down to hard work and our failures down to bad luck.

It's a growning problem (IMHO) not because of the numbers, but because lack of parenting skills gets passed down. One ill educated and pooly skilled parent produces three or four of the same.
It's just what I have seen, I may be wrong. I hope I am.

The lifestyle choice (again, based on my limited experience) may be tough, but the free accommodation is a big driver
