Things have been different for me the last few years because I have been pouring all my cash into a house renovation, but that's almost finished and I will start to make sure that I work no more than I need to from now on. I never book more than a few days out when I am in a role though.

Do you take time off between contracts?

I keep the contracts going if I can, and take leave when I want to during the contract.
I did have 2 months off early 2011, between contracts, not by choice though.
4 days off before this contract.
Usually need to ensure I have something to go back to, to clear the credit card that has taken a bashing while away.Never has a man been heard to say on his death bed that he wishes he'd spent more time in the office.Comment

Thats the trouble with having a break between contracts. It all depends on whether you've got a large enough warchest and confidence that something will come up when you want it.
All well and good to take 3 months off knowing you can walk into something after exactly 3 months when you want. Reality is you might have to take it when you can.
Personally, I'd be too scared to spend too much in those 3 months worrying whether I'd get something else sorted (or whether there'd be an enforced 6 months further on the bench). And I'd be thinking how much my day of lazing on the settee had just cost me.
Ideal situation is a top paid contract which starts in 3 months. Would love that. No worries at all. (assuming it was safe from falling through in the interim).Rhyddid i lofnod psychocandy!!!!Comment

Yes. Am off now. Client co is getting very bad at paying, 30 days terms paid on 65 days.
So am considering telling them Im not coming back without being paid weekly up front. Which Im sure will be a no.Comment

I always say I'm going to take time off between contracts, but I generally don't.
That being said, I am never desperately looking to get something so I can have a Friday finish and Monday start on something else, so I usually have a few weeks off while I look to get something.
I think I still have a bit of the permie fear of not being in work, even though I have a pretty decent war chest and have been contracting nearly 5 years.Last edited by jmo21; 24 January 2013, 16:32.Comment

I'd like to take time off but need to get the NorrCorp coffers in a decent state. I have a healthy warchest, but cloggy rules are different and you can't just take a "salary break" like with a UK limited, which is a PITA.
If I could line summat up then I would probably take a couple of weeks off before starting.Comment

Only time off since 2007 was 2 weeks in '09 whilst waiting for BC & the first part of SC clearance and wedding/honeymoon last year. All friday/monday since then.
Told current clientco I'm not extending after end of april unless I get a 5% rate bump (inflation....) and reduced days in office. I'm expecting them to say no but I have a warchest so I'm not panicking. I'm actually quite looking forward to being jobless. I do however expect that feeling to fade after my second day of daytime TV.Comment
