You don't have a typical family do you? In most families I know of there is at least one long running battle in which 1 part of a family don't talk to the rest of them and its been going on so long no one can remember the original reason.

On my mum's side the issue seems to relate to the post office not delivery 1 wedding invitation on the same day everyone else received theirs. That part of the family took it as an insult, didn't attend the wedding and haven't attended any family functions (including a few funerals) since.
