Festive period in oz is devoid of character.

    Enjoy though.

Yep, a bit lacking in something, but more than made up for by the weather, the fresh seafood and wine that costs bugger all. I think we'll manage.

That, sir, is a wonderful break! Enjoy!

Thanks there are a few I was already considering. Have to avoid the UK as I don't want to eat any more into the 183 days.

Is it Edinburgh or Glasgow which has the big Xmas market (or both)?

It was in Glasgow last week, they head to Edinburgh for Christmas.

Thankfully Glasgow has got shot of "Winterfest" and has rebranded to "Glasgow loves Christmas"

Get the train to Paris and/or down to Spain. Very civilised.

Cracking place. See if you can get up to Cape Trib (don't stop at Mossman) and see what paradise really looks like.

One thing I really did enjoy being up that way, was gold medal wins, at around £6 a pop, sea food you can't beat and the scenery.

If you get yourself to Port Douglas (nice small town), check out the CSL for cheap grub overlooking the bay. It's about as good as it gets, in a place you'd never believe could be as good (it is an old tin missen hut).

Very, very envious; proper holiday that.

Try London. I know how much you like it here.

                    Or how about Holland?

Aside from that, Istanbul's brilliant for xmas and new year.
+1 My favourite memory was Christmas Lunch at the Four Seasons watching the waiters trying to work out what to do with the debris from our crackers.

There are however far nicer hotels to stay at we just used it for Lunch.
