I'm sure all the expenses-grubbing MPs would say they are out to look after their families just as you defend your status as a money-grubbing contractor. "looking out for yourself" can be considered to include your immediate family.

The fact they are performing a public service doesn't answer why you think those people should have a fundamentally different nature to everyone else. It would be nice if they were all virtuous selfless people, but that's equally true of every other walk of life too, and equally idealistic.

I'm not money grubbing , I don't get expenses and certainly don't have a house that is valued at 1.8 million GBP 20 miles away from where I work.

F##k it let's do away with the government then, like you said 90% population are out for themselves so surely some people got into politics to improve things for people other than themselves

Contractors as a group are fairly "money grubbing" was what I meant - how many times does the theme "who cares as long as your invoice gets paid" come across. We don't get MPs expenses but we do take advantage of business laws to line our pockets further

It's a basic fact of human nature that people are selfish (I think both evolutionists and major religions tend to agree on this!)

How would you suggest changing the system to stop people getting into politics for personal wealth and power? I personally think most MPs are in it for the right reasons, as I've argued in the past, but this seems a minority view on CUK.

I think its a bit negative to say everyone's selfish.

There have been studies in psychology that debate whether anyone does anything for anything but selfish motives, but there's not really anything proven. (E.g giving money to make yourself feel good, is a selfish motive).

Personally, I think there's lots of people out there who've been disadvantaged or upset by people in their lives being very selfish, who then go on to ensure they act as selflessly as possible.

Umm, I guess Euro's a typo, but no, it bears no relevance to remaining in the EU; the question bears relevance to d000hg's perfectly sensible question that if Britain leaves the EU, 'what next?' and to the UKIP policy of negotiating a free trade deal with the EU.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

I've not taken advantage of any of those business laws as yet my friend

Make it less lucrative in terms of pensions and expenses for one, as well as making them more accountable to their constituents because they're there to convey the views of the people they serve not to make a good life for themselves as seems to be the case at present.

Some leaders will have the arse, we are net contributors to the EU budget. But is that a reason to treat EU trade with the UK any worse than that with China, Switzerland, the US or India? Probably not, especially we are net buyers of EU goods and services.

I didn't say everyone, I said people in general are selfish. You can take that as most people are selfish, or most people are selfish most of the time
There are people who are very selfless but they are not the norm.

I have no doubt Britain will get shafted when they leave the EU. But that's no reason not to leave.
