If I'm in a good contract we might drink good Rieslings or Burgundies at the weekend, and during the week or if I'm on the bench we drink South African chateau cheapo from boxes. Luckily, wine's cheaper in NL than in the UK; you can get a very decent bottle for 4 euros. Next year the duties are going up, so I'll take 40 km trips to Deutschland and buy several cases at a time. I expect there'll be lots of others doing the same.

I'd include the odd bottle of wine in the weekly shop (M&S dine in for example) but we tend to do wine as a separate thing (wine club). We do have a pretty big stockpile at the moment and more to come at Christmas

I am not really a drinker, but I am assured that the amounts spent include all toiletries, bin bags and household stuff. We don't eat any processed foods either, choose organic and there is some wine in the bill. I am starting to think it's about right now.

Oh, and I bake a lot, don't know why, but love to make bread, so we spend a bit on breadmaking stuff. Currently right into sourdough, which is fidly to get going, and costly to start, but once you're up and running, settles down.

Lots of childless people making assumptions here.
£80K a year and a huge mortgage + childcare. Yes that would be toughish.
We're paying £2K a month for childcare, if you had a big mortgage on top of that it would certainly use up a big chunk of cash.

We do £12k on food - 3 kids and 2 adults. The caveat being we try and only by locally sourced stuff, so meats and veggies are mostly local (in season), which is more expensive. But my wife reckons £250 a week is a normal cost.

I haven't been shopping for about 15 years, so wouldn't know. Is that way too much?

Depends what you call 'food'.

If you mean a trip to the supermarket and all the stuff you buy there (soap, shampoos, bin liners, jif, bog roll, washing powder, dishwasher detergent, deodorant, booze, cat food) then £250 not a lot for 5.

£250 a week seems a bit high for food for five people.

five could live high off the hog for about £180, probably £100 if you wanted to rough it
half that, if you wanted to slum it
