    John Major

    I'm one of those people who thinks John Major didn't do such a bad job at all. In fact, at the end of his period in government, the books were balanced and UK business was very competitive.

    Strange, then, that Ed Miliband uses him as an example of weakness;
    Mr Miliband said the prime minister "can't convince anyone on Europe"... "He is weak abroad, he is weak at home: It's John Major all over again."
    BBC News - EU budget: Cameron in bitter clash with Miliband

    Has John Major been given an unfairly rough ride by the press, his own party and the public? Was he not considerably better at his job than the 2 labour prime ministers that followed him?

    IMO yes, he was far better at his job than Blair, Brown, Cameron/Clegg

      I guess he wasn't as media friendly as the others - think the Spitting Image Grey Man spoof set the tone

      and is it good/bad that he did Edwina?
      How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

        Good going for an ugly bloke, probably not very pleasant for his wife.

            What, by privatising them?

              I think he did a good job tbh, think the bad rep was due to the perception that he was a puppet for Thatcher

              He probably was for a short while but did come into his own later on, not exciting politics tho...

                  tbh I wouldn't care less if the PM was a one eyed ugly grumpy fecker who couldn't even write a "sad to see your loss" note as long as they didn't do something stupid like sell large chunks of the countries gold at the worst time....

                    They were already corporatised. They were fooked well before privatisation, some time back in the 60s when the local lines that bring passengers to the trunk lines were shut down.
