I know everyone deserves justice, and I feel sorry for any victims, but where is the public interest in trying a 86 year old man with severe dementia, the trial by facts thing is ridiculous, one of the principles of law is that you must be able to defend yourself. As crass as it sounds, but I wonder trial by facts opens up a bid for compensation.
there is a benefit as it may expose others who haven't laid out their dementia defence yet.

If the person uses an insanity plea should we not bother prosecuting them?

If as suggested he was a kingpin in the abuse society and guilty of abuse he needs to be prosecuted, lets hope he takes some other scum with him.

Apparently, his dementia is only severe when it suits him.

There's a shock. Who would have thought that a politician could ever consider manipulating a situation for personal benefit?

Which is what happened with Ernest Saunders. And anyone else who can afford a good lawyer.

Perhaps he can induce his dementia to kick into overdrive when the judge pronounces that they are going to throw away the key?

Anyone with severe dementia wouldn't be seen driving into the House of Lords.. He seems to have Ernest Saunder's Alzheimer's.

Reality is that he needs his day in court where the judge decides whether he is fit to try rather than the DPP.

Given the DPP's propensity for getting it wrong, perhaps they should be in court!

A judge will get both parties to chose a medical expert who specialises in neurological diseases either jointly or one each to determine whether he can stand trial.

However he may still get away with it if he decides to have another health condition associated with old age, but this one really needs to get him incapacitated e.g a heart attack, a stroke.
