I once got paid double that for half a days work for physically moving desks around the office.

Shocking. Still, I bet there's someone out there who is on half that amount as a permie and creaming in their pants at such a high rate

What about that is either surprising or worrying? In my book any company that upgrades critical software to an edition matching the current year is focusing on upgrading for the sake of it without performing due diligence.

It does depend. The latest version may have a feature you really need although if you're talking sql server 2012 I doubt there is anything in it that is a solution to a burning issue if you're currently using 2008 .

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

Obviously there are exceptions but rushing in for some specific feature is precisely the kind of scenario where corners might get cut and in case of problems, you end up unable to revert easily.

It depends if your software is in any way critical to users whether you can make that gamble.
