Why not write to your MP and suggest it as an alternative to IR35?Originally posted by Robinho View PostI have thought it through and i don't see any major problems.Comment

Tbh i never thought an idea to abolish all VAT, Corp, Income, Dividend tax whilst at the same time getting rid of 80 quid a month on accountancy and mercifully giving HMRC a far easier task to accomplish would have such a negative reaction on a contractor forum.Comment

Will there be free unicorns as well?Originally posted by Robinho View PostTbh i never thought an idea to abolish all VAT, Corp, Income, Dividend tax whilst at the same time getting rid of 80 quid a month on accountancy and mercifully giving HMRC a far easier task to accomplish would have such a negative reaction on a contractor forum. The material prosperity of a nation is not an abiding possession; the deeds of its people are.

One of the key things people have hinted at but you have sensibly steered clear of is how would you value land in the first place? Against what classifications? How would it fit in with planning? How would you revalue land that becomes economically dormant? How would you manage foreign ownership? How would you manage land that had to be confiscated because owners go bankrupt? How often would you revalue? How much would it cost to implement and operate?Originally posted by Robinho View PostI have thought it through and i don't see any major problems.
What happened to Window Tax, Brick Tax, Hearth Tax? Why do you think most country houses are now owned by National Heritage or other charities? How would you manage charitable ownership?Comment

No there won't be free unicorns, but can you honestly not see any benefit to such a system?
I know most of you just come on here to belittle an idea on principal, but let's be frank you couldn't really get much worse than the current taxation system.Comment

I actually explicitly addressed this in response to one of your posts earlier.Originally posted by tractor View PostOne of the key things people have hinted at but you have sensibly steered clear of is how would you value land in the first place? All of these are pretty minor obstacles which could be answered with a tiny bit of thought.Comment

Why do you believe land value tax would be a problem? The transition might be a bit messy but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it.
Indeed there are several benefits to it, (1) it does not distort the natural market, and as i believe the market is the best way to allocate resources a system that does not distort this is very good (2) it's more or less impossible to avoid paying it, you can't really claim your factory or your house is actually based in the cayman islands (3) It's generally quite simple, there would have to be a bit of bureaucracy determining the value of land every year but i can't see that being any bigger than the current HMRC army. Also means accountants would be more a less a thing of the past.
Is that the explanation you refer to? A bit of bureaucracy? I guess that make it much clearer.Comment
