Is it sad that when I figured this out yesterday, I knocked up a little VB app to calculate the outcome and randomly generate numbers so I could test the theory ....
Remove the even numbers, take 1 off the odd numbers and add them together. If all numbers are even it's zero. But that doesn't really explain the meaning of the puzzle which is better understood by looking at a dice.

Each 5 counts as 4, each 3 counts as 2, nothing else matters. If there are no 3s or 5s, the answer is zero. If the answer is odd, round up.
Simple as that.
