I dont think they were bothered about killing the children, it sounds like they were professionals. They shot each victim twice in the head. If they were worried about the kids revealing their identity, they would have killed them

I thought all his head was missing, but I'll bow to greater knowledge.

I guess he was wearing a yellow cycling shirt then as frequented by many cyclics over the ears.

FWIW, if I had to guess I'd say he was involved in some money laundering for senior Iraqi politician or general etc (hence maybe his being near Swizerland), but let them down or was skimming too much off the top.

The indisciminate killings combined with their thoroughness (apart from the kids) suggests a warning to others was a big incentive, and that this was some home-grown Iraqi tulip.

But let's not forget the two kids survived (so far), despite being shot. So, although presumably the message was that the whole family was supposed to die, maybe the shooter deliberately (?) botched the kids' shooting to at least give them a chance, while at the same time nominally carrying out orders.

I still cannot figure this out:

A professional was hired to kill the family and not the kids:

Why shoot the girl in the shoulder (potentially life threatening).
If he intended to not kill the kids they he would have had his face covered and an escape planned.

A professional was hired to kill them all:

Why shoot the girl in the shoulder and not the head as well?
Why beat her first, surely if she had run for it he would have had to run after her to catch her, why not just shoot her as she ran?

A professional was hired to kill the cyclist and killed the family because they were unlucky:
                    Same questions as previous.

The family were doing some kind of illegal deal with the cyclist and someone dangerous found out and sent a hitman ie they were ALL targets:

Same as above but also, why did the family bring their children to an illegal activity like that.

A lunatic set upon them with a gun:

Possibly but unlikely given the precision of the double tapping.

Perhaps the assailant beat the girl to try and get information out of the father, like bank account numbers.

Or maybe their instructions were to kidnap the kids, again to pressure the father, but everything went Pete Tong for one reason or another (distraction caused by the sudden appearance of the cyclist possibly?) and once the father had been shot there was no further point in worrying about the kids or indeed the mission.

                      Only guessing mind ...
