I'm going to go for a long shot and say he was a terrorist, and was assasinated before could blow up his target

Er, what about instead of assuming everyone inside is dead (remember Simon Weston had half his head missing when shot in the Falklands), opening the door, checking if anyone was actually still alive, by which point it would be hard to miss another pair of legs. This might have saved the little girl from spending 8 hours hiding under her dead mother. Yes a bullet in the head is usually very bad for you, but not always fatal. Worse still - can you imagine if after 8 hours the forensics team had turned up and gone er, 2 of them are not dead yet, but then eneded up dying in hospital due to the loss of blood.Originally posted by BBCThe investigators said there were several reasons why the youngest girl was not found earlier, including that police were told not to disturb the scene before the arrival of forensic investigators; and they did not want to compromise the ballistics investigation by opening the car doors because some of the windows had cracks made by the bullets.

I watched Columbo yesterday so I feel qualified to speculate. None of the victims were the intended targets; it was the retired ex RAF pilot who found them i.e. it was a botch job.
The target lived nearby and maybe had a fairly standard routine i.e. could be found in the same place at the same time. This is imperative to plan a targeted assassination and would have been difficult with a family on holiday. They probably had a spotter who told them the target was on the way, they didn’t plan for him to be overtaken and shot the wrong guy, they then realised they had been seen by the family sat in the car. The family knew it was bad and they had time to hide to younger girl and for the older one to try and make a run for it before the killers got to them. This explains the girls positioning, also if the family was the target they would have known about the younger one, if they attempted to kill a seven year old they would have no qualms about the four year old.
Anyway I better get back to work. But I discovered nothing else but depraved, excessive superstition. Pliny the youngerComment

The kids were probably saved due to the cyclist disturbing the killer.Originally posted by Gibbon View PostThe family knew it was bad and they had time to hide to younger girl and for the older one to try and make a run for it before the killers got to them. The killer realised he had to get out as there would probably be more cyclists on the way, so he decided he didn't have time to look for the 4 year old girl and was in a panic so didn't check he had actually finished of the 7 year old properly."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment
