Starbucks came to Germany a few years ago and a majority stakehold was bought by Karstadt, a major retailer. Stores opened in the major cities and a few towns with plans for expansion. the problem was, and still is, that no-one really went as the cafe culture is and was thriving. Karstadt eventually sold its stakeholding due to not making a profit and many Starbucks shutdown. The one area which is growing is McCafe (the McDonalds one) with them slowly changing all McDonalds into McCafe's and now burger King has got into the act. As for independent cafes, they're thriving and I'm seeing new ones open all the time. I think people over here don't always need the latest and greatest, are not blinded by 'bling'...

That's because Germany still has a culture. Some countries, including NL, are busy throwing their culture in the bin for the sake of a few more pounds or euros.

Tbf there are 1000s of independent Cafes in London. Even with all the prets and subways and eats.

People like to go to independent cafes so they will always be there.

I'm not sure about others , but I'm not talking about London. London is the only place that seems to be getting any growth or attention; when it comes.

That's most of the problem IMO , that politics and pro "neo capitalism" supportors seem to think that the rest of the country is a reflection of the capital.

You might not realise , as you live in a cushy little right wing world , with your butler (if you are going to generalise I will) but many many countries are at war right now, and mostly over resources.

I just happen to live in London and thus can make an informed observation on the constitution of cafes here.

I do generalise a bit with tories , that's who I'm really aiming at. I believe in moderation and thats why I tend to put down some extremes hoping people meet in the middle. In other words, I'm a softie....
