To the OP, I am a life-long Porsche fan and have been lucky to own a few.

If you can afford it an '09 Plate Boxster (987 Generation 2) with a 2.9L engine an manual box will be one of the best drives you will ever own. A bit of research tells you that it was the 3rd highest rated car (now the 2nd behind the Ferrari 458) by the motoring press.

The only car that beats it on steering feel is a modern Lotus but the gearbox on the Boxster is far better.

The modern 997 911 (2004-2011) is not actually the better drive although it does have extra power and kudos. They are bigger, heavier and the Cabs don't look quite right in my eyes. There is not much in it between the two cars on a B road.

The GT-R is a different proposition, its bigger, faster but nowhere near as stylish or as rewarding to drive at UK road speeds. The ride is also very hard and you cannot have the roof down.

The problem with Boxster's is that not many have driven one but many like to drop their opinion on them, there is no comparison between these cars and the likes of the SLK, Nissan Z and the Beemers, the boxster/cayman is different class.

Go for it, you won't regret it.

Thanks for that - at last someone who judges a car properly on how it drives, rather than how it appears to other people.
Shame it took so many posts before some expertise turned up.
TBH I got the Boxster in my mind becaiuse I read an article by a motoring journalist on how good the new model was.
          Hard Brexit now!

It’s surprising how tinny the engine sounds when you start it. That flat six makes a fair old metallic clatter.....It's not a smooth ride up to the red line, for while the revs climb inexorably, the power surges and lunges against the adjusting cam timing.

The Cayman remains the best driver’s proposition, but that’s not what the Boxster is about. It’s a car to drive briskly, with the hood down, not at the bitter edges of roadholding with a frown of concentration, but with a smile and a lightness of spirit

Or, as is apt in ass's case, it's like being one woman short of being gay.

.....with a mere 480bhp available, progress is too leisurely to be called fast, but on the motorway in eighth gear the Boxster’s slow pace really becomes a pain. Uphill runs become power-sappingly mundane, while overtaking National Express coaches can become a long, drawn-out affair. Not my words, SAS, the words of Top Gear magazine.

Rather fancy the Boxster Spyder, but the 'hood' looks much like a caravan awning.

I'd never buy a Boxster for the following

                      a) I am not gay
                      b) I am not over 50 & a
                      c) If I am looking for a drivers car, I would buy one whose structural integrity hasn't been compromised by having no roof.
                      d) I am not a hairdresser or aspire to be one
                      e) I would look like I couldn't afford a real one (Porsche).
                      f) They start at 38k for a car with less power then a Vauxhall Astra.
                      g) It shouts I have no imagination.
                      h) It would shout I have attempted to be a winner in life, but ironically, buying this proves I have lost.

It screams as our French cousins would say of Quebecois:, ce n'est pas la chose reelle
