Weird Critters in my Water Butt

Don't know what they are but I'm guessing larvae of some description.

They have a rectangular shaped body about 8 mm long with a flagellum around 30 mm. Look like giant bacteria.

Shudder. Revolting looking things. Anyway know what they are?

Yes, I think that's what they are.


Apparently hover flies are good to have in the garden and people encourage them to breed by leaving buckets of stagnant water in the garden.

Had an flying army of horseflys come out of bucket of stagnant water recently, the horsefly in Scotland is called the clegg, horrible blood sucking things they are.
