Maybe, but it won't have much effect on wave creation. Normal ebb and flow of tides will be just that, a gradual ebb and flow. Without the wind-generated waves imposed on top of the tidal movement, you won't get the wave action that gradually goes up and down the beach. It would be more like a bath filling up and then emptying.Originally posted by Spacecadet View PostYou forgot the influence of the moon
Of course there will be a few bores around the world, the most notable being the Severn Bore and so there will be predictable waves for the surfers to enjoy.
However, this assumes that the Moon is in the same orbit as it is now. If the Sun has gone out with a whimper rather than a bang, then by then, the Moon should have receded and the Earth's rotational speed reduced to the point where the Moon's orbital period is the same as the Earth's day. Thus we get no more tides and no more tidal waves. (I was going to say no more bores but that is asking for trouble).

If there was no sun the sea would freeze... so isn't the argument moot? I am not convinced there would be no wind without the sun anyway. Spinning a non-frictionless solid body surrounded by an envelope of gas leads to air-speed differential based on height; the fact the body is not smooth would lead to disturbances.

If the Sun has gone, the moon is locked to the Earth's rotation, then there would be no outside influences that can act on the atmosphere. So, as the Earth rotates, it is this rotation that can be the only influence on the atmosphere and it would tend to drag it along with it. The lower parts of the atmosphere would be the fastest but this would drag along higher levels and so on upwards. Eventually, the entire atmosphere would reach an equilibrium whereby it all travels along at the same speed as the Earth and so effectively all air movement stops, apart from random events such as meteor impacts.Comment
