I'm not entirely sure what is expected in this case. The political class have to balance the interests of their own electorate (however poorly they do that) and contagion risk (Greece is just a small chip in the big picture) against the reality that the debt is unserviceable and that this may jeopardise their whole project, which not everyone is on board with anyway. The Euro project in its current shape is a mess, and would require fiscal discipline from all member states to function well; it worked to the benefit of debtor states for years, until the recession came. That fiscal discipline is unlikely to come, so realistically I see the debt being written off and a Grexit as the only real way forward, with a Northern European currency union supplanting the Euro. Yet none of them (including the IMF) want to be seen as pushing for Grexit, bar Schaeuble perhaps. They're doing their damnedest to keep up appearances, IMO.
