That said, I bought a pair of Palladium thingies as I was hacked off with the winter salt buggering the shoe leather.

In the case of shoes the adage "you get what you pay for" applies.
Yes, need to get mine resoled soon and I'll be sending them back to get it done properly. True, maybe not a lifetime, but I expect the cost per year to be a lot less than a pair of next or clarks.

You don't necessarily get what you pay for. Any trip to a fashionable shoe shop and you'll be met with smart LOOKING shoes with moulded/glued soles for well over £100. Now I've had my Cheaneys for a while I'd never go back. Well worth the money.

These are seriously nice shoes. I have a few pairs and they have lasted me six years so far. But you do need to break them in at the start.

Good point. You've reminded me about a nasty experience with a pair of expensive and tulipe Kurt Geiger. Learnt that one the hard way.

Liking the look of these but not sure I can bring myself to pay £300~ for a pair of shoes.

My current ones have barely lasted 3 months - but then they were cheap ones from office.

          Any other recommendations?

I got a pair last year. Take a bit of getting used to, but since I've had them, my Achille's tendon has stopped playing up; also my feet no longer hurt if I'm standing for a long time.

              Grenson.

Bomb proof. Had a pair since 2012 and they look barely six months old. Goodyear welt, but then again, they're probably out of your range too.

Loake could be worth a look at around the £200/pair mark if you're not completely a contractor yet.

                Loake dear boy.

Get your man onto pronto, and damn his impudence.

Edit: I will give a mention to Jeffery West; not owned a pair but they did have some lyrics from Sympathy for the Devil on the sole. I liked that.

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.

Some really nice shoes on there and I'd love to invest in some good stylish shoes but I just don't get the idea of expensive shoes to last. They go on your feet and put up with all sorts of abuse. Surely they get tatty over time whatever make? People standing on your toe on nights out, subbing toes when out and about. Once the leather is scuffed or scratched they are buggered? How can they last a lifetime if they have to put up with that... or should I just take more care not to shoulder to shoulder nights out and not stub my toes? What gives?
