people are people are having accidents and being killed at camera sites (the map shows different) then the cameras would pick up the accident if the vehicles were speeding; but they don’t. The way the police record and accident is that every accident that involves a vehicle exceeding the speed limit is recorded with speed as a factor even if all four wheels fall off and caused the accident.

Anyone who believes that speed causes accidents is a blithering moron and really needs isolating from society as that stupidity sadly is infectious.

However there are plenty of morons about in the everyday world, even on CUK so we might need to break this down: Speed has never caused an accident, ever. Why is it a veyron can go at 200mph without skidding off the road and bursting in to flames, but anyone attempting to do so in a saloon car often does crash and burn? If speed were a factor, then the veyron wouldnt be able to go above that speed. The causes of speed are:

- Not being able to appreciate changing road layouts ahead and regulating acceleration and braking
- Overestimating ones abilities
- Taking components above their rated ability and not maintaining a vehicle properly
- Lack of awareness of hazards nearby or anticipation
- Erratic input and a lack of sympathy for the vehicle
- Underestimating weather and general conditions
- Not keeping recommended distances and impatience






None of these problems are due to going too fast. Some are instigated by going too slowly in fact. Yet they are not the only factor in play, just the catalyst.

What is needed is to get rid of propaganda of speed killing. Instead focus all that funding and effort on telling people:
- They are not thinking ahead
- They are failing to anticipate others
- They are failing to keep proper distances
- They are failing to respect the conditions of the road and alter their driving appropriately or are being too aggressive with the cars controls

None of those issues relate to speed, speed is never a killer on the road, the idiot behind the wheel is.

A lot of what wim says makes sense, the limits are there to make the roads safer because of the very bad driver. Which makes life tough for the good driver, because their judgement is removed from the equation.

Of course, there is no way in the world you can convince a bad driver that they are a bad driver, and its tough to spot them up front

Except that if the driver of the 200mph Veyron described has to stop for a child stepping into the road, or some other unexpected hazard, he will travel 60m while thinking about stopping, and another 750m before he can actually stop. Simple fact, the faster you are going the less reaction time you have; your exact point is vague - of course there almost never a single cause to a collision, but inappropriate speed - the topic of the thread - is certainly an aggrevating factor in some and a cause of others.

Yeah but no but. The NRA says that guns don't kill people, people do. This is true, sort of. And sort of not.

So long as idiots are allowed to drive, don't we have to try to limit the damage they can do?
