Contract interview are quick 20-40 mins just covering your CV and telling you about the role with maybe a few questions thrown in. Anything more than that and I would reject it.

I think the main issue is that his pipes are leaky.

Clearly they're not. And no reason they should be - a contractor hired for a full year is neither a cheap nor a short-term measure. For a 3-monther it's a different story, but making a business decision to spend £100k in 20 minutes isn't prudent.

But the one of the main benefits of using contractors is that you can terminate them if they are useless. People can wing their way through interviews so you can't be sure until they have been there a few weeks.

Lets be clear on this. I agree with Russell.

          I feel dirty.

              Several points to answer that:
              1. You can terminate new employees very easily too; probation periods are the norm
              2. Even if you terminate after a week, that's a couple of grand wasted
              3. That is dwarfed by the hassle of having to start looking for another person, you could lose man-weeks of work if you hire the wrong contractor, for a loss of £10k+
So even if you can drop them, bringing someone in for a year is a big decision that should be carefully made.
