What do you mean 'you have no choice'? Have you lost your driving license? Have you been banned from all local cab companies for puking up in the cabs (or worse)? You can't get a bike? Did you fire the chauffeur?

There is NEVER an exuse for taking a bus. You are a contractor - start acting like one.

A bus into the centre of Manchester is quicker than a car. Therefore more time available for billing in any 24 hour period for you contracting scum.

I saw James Caan from Dragons Den on a Virgin Train from Euston - Manchester a few weeks ago. He came through Economy. I was puzzled initially but then saw him go into 1st Class - he had only just got onto the train in time.

City centre traffic actually moves at the speed of buses (esp London- have you tried getting on the tubes recently?) so you are unlikely to make gains to journey times in a private vehicle

1st class on trains was useful in the old days when you had dedicated carriages and a conductor to enforce access
Modern trains appear just to have reserved seating within an existing carriage, no benefit at all

Getting in the way of buses (and sailing past motorists during rush hour) are part of the fun. I usually spot a coach or lorry in Lewisham - usually takes them 4 miles to get past me.

depends on the size of the train
The Trans Pennine Express I get to and from work just has a seperate area of seating which can easily be accessed by anyone and during busy periods the conductors never bother coming through to check even if they don't officially declassify first class. The regular passengers know this and you see the same twats in there every time it's busy (half of them don't even try standard they just run straight into first). Whats even more annoying is that even on a declassified train, seating preference in first class is supposed to be with first class ticket holders, but again with no enforcement there is effectively no rule.

The (what used to be called) intercity trains on the other hand do seem to properly control entry to first class but I would still recommend trying to get a seat as far away from standard as you can.

As for late night travel on the smaller trains. I would think twice about travelling in first class, especially on the weekends. The Open access, plus the fact that standard class passengers may have to pass through to reach the toilets mean that you could be an easy target if in there by yourself.
