Bus lanes on a two lane road are a disgrace, there is probably 1 bus/bike to every 100 cars yet they get 50% of that bit of road.

Actually, in addition to helping buses get around they serve to reduce the amount of disruption caused by the buses stopping. Without them, every time a bus stops you get a lane of traffic that has to stop and then tries to pull out around the bus disrupting the flow of traffic in the other lane. If the people in the "bus" lane just stopped and waited then it would be more efficient not to have them, but of course they don't so at some point when buses are particularly frequent on a section of road the throughput with a bus lane is higher than it is without one.

You also need to look at the extent to which having more punctual bus services and safer cycling routes reduces car use, as that reduces congestion overall.

The obvious thing for you to do would be to get a bike and hare along the bus lanes to your hearts content. Or take the bus if you aren't up to cycling.

I have a 85 mile roundtrip, so a bike isn't much use. I would prefer there were cycle lanes everywhere and no bus lanes, as it its most places have a half baked cycle lanes that suddenly end plunging you into a menacing road.

From the point of view of insurance speed does not matter. It is right of way.

Presumably you also would drive along the pavement if there were no pedestrians, drive along the hard shoulder on a motorway when there's a jam, etc?
