Nowt wrong with 'menial labour'. I've swept the floors in warehouses before and enjoyed it. Every job has its 'craic'.

Kick one out, give me his brush, and I'll happily start sweeping at 8am tomorrow.

if there were 2.75 million people less in the country, demand for shops, bus drivers, police nurses etc would drop by an equivilent amount, say 4%.

so the population would go down, but unemployement would not. it might even go up

The difference between the Eastern Europeans and the British unemployed is that they do not have sufficient welfare. Panorama on Monday was about American unemployed and I had to admire those who were hustling in the street to sell and earn money. It may not be very nice to do low level menial work but it is a lot better than being paid to sit at home and do nothing.

It is as it has always been for the vast majority of us to get on in life we have to get off our arses and do something.

I have yet to meet a long term doley who is not either bone idle or chav scum or both

The last time the BBC spoke to Ben was in 2010, two years after he had his last job. He was pessimistic then. That pessimism has become a permanent state of mind, with little to no hope for the future. He insists he's not lazy.
If he's medically depressed, that's a tough situation to fight back from.

It's about time they invented direct brain injections for depression, to correct the chemical imbalances

There you go.. You just brush and whistle and get on with it.

Every time someone posts one of these 'Mail' threads, all the usual 'holier than thou' tripe gets recycled again.

I wonder how many of you are actually what you say you are?

There is no such thing as a 'menial' job. And its easy to criticise if you live in London with billions of square feet of office space to clean every night.

When times were good, instead of 'allocating' every able-bodied person a job, whether they wanted it or not, you imported thousands of foreigners instead, and now you moan when they dont go home when the job market contracts :-)

Absolutly, so saying "If he was working, then somebody else would be on the dole instead.", is absolute tosh. It's not a 'one in one out policy', it's about who has the best attitude and motivation for finding work, and at the moment, it isn't people like Ben.
