Just bought a 3d Smart TV

I got my 59" 3D Sammy (plasma) from JL recently, at a great price match and 5 year warranty thrown in for good measure.

Awesome TV. The 3D is a bit of a gimmick but it's fun for a while and the kids love it. Haven't tried 3D gaming yet.

The best part is connecting it up to my AVR and Kefs. I sit about 4 metres from the screen so the overall effect is mindblowing.

Good for gaming too, again you feel totally immersed with the big screen and surround sound.

BTW active is better than passive as the PQ is better due to far less loss of HD transmission into 3D. Active is also the more prevalent technology being used by manufacturers.

When we first looked at TV's, we saw a UMC crappy brand 32" LCD for £200 (cheapest 32" in the shops), but the picture on it really was appalling.

To be honest, I never even looked at hotdeals (used to use the site, but I dont know if it's just me, but the deals dont seem to be as good nowadays?).

Only reason we really went for above 40" is because eventually we'll wall hang it and in our lounge, anything less than 40" might look a bit out of place.

We have an inglenook fireplace in our lounge which never gets used. Missus wants me to block it up and wall hang a telly there.

Problem is, it will have to be at least 100 inches to fill that space. Not sure if you can get tellies that big and even if you can it'll cost me a small fortune.

I bought a Samsung smart TV for Mr P about 6 months ago - all singing all dancing, 3d glasses etc blue ray player and a really nice chrome stand that hides all the cables and has a shelf for the blu ray player and sky box.
( I HATE trailing cables)
He loves it. We had a dalliance with LoveFilm, but have canceled that and signed up for NetFlix (?) instead.
I have to admit the HD picture quality is really good and all the internetage stuff keeps him very happy.

It came with a free remote which looks like a mobile phone, as well as the usual style of remote. I don't think its very well designed and we never use it.
I have a Samsung galaxy S2 and have an app called swipeit that I can use to push pictures off my phone screen on to the TV, which is rather fun.

- We still haven't used the 3D glasses yet though

We have a gas fire but it really is old so doesnt pump out much heat. I want to hang the TV above that but Ive heard that hanging them above fires kills them?

(Dont suppose it's an issue if you plan to block it up, but why does Mrs.P want it blocked up? They're lovely fireplaces!)

Have you though about projectors?

You can get a decent new one with high lumens, HD and various inputs for £200-£500, then a projector screen for under £100.

Far cheaper and better route IMHO.
