    6) Hard Disks - one could say they are standard rather than PC specific, but it was PC sales that drove such hard disks in the first place

The is only 1 Apple hardware contribution to it - Firewire.

Most computer hardware for personal computers is developed with expressed aim to make sure it works for Windows because if it doesn't then usually there is no viable market for it.

If Apple was in charge (ie like Microsoft is now) it would probably require 30% of sale price as condition of hardware sale to work for Macs.

As much as I admire Steve Jobs as true pioneer of IT industry I feel grateful that he never managed to reach position Microsoft found itself in.

Not used Windows in a while, have you.

What I like about non-mac laptops/desktops (forgetting OS preferences for the time being), is that when a component fails, it is really easy to source and swap in a new component. What put me totally of all things Apple, was when the HD failed, after one year, in my iPod, I either had to fork out for Apple to fix it (twice what a 1.8" HD should cost), or ditch it, since the HD was one you could only buy in bulk - not available for retail use.

People used to bang on about M$ being evil. Apple took their position long ago, and the macheads were too stupid to notice.

That's because these companies want to keep making money. They're not interested in making anything that lasts or is reliable.

only while in the office. It's ie6 and the last hour of typing and then 'sorry word has to close we apologise for the inconvenience' or perhaps IT has install critical update your keyboard and mouse are temporary disabled.

One of the many reasons I like Apple products is for their design. Some people have money to burn others don't, this exclusivity for design shall keep this customer.

Incidentally my MBP is 4+ years old and still going strong... you may have been just unlucky.

I've got a 4+ year old Dell laptop and my older and very cheap (<£250) Tosh is now over 5 and half years old and is still being (mis)used by the Mrs

I've seen no evidence for Apple kit being more reliable or at least significantly more reliable than non-apple stuff

As do Dell, Asus, Acer etc.

Apple are innovators, so much so that the windows brigade have invented the whole new genre of "ultrabook" to compete.

Apple normally uses yesterdays technology to sell it at tomorrow's prices...
