I find it surprising that 26 Euro nations decided early one morning to hand over control of their economies to a supra-national body (which may be unelected).

And therein lies the problem. You will not get elected by promising to balance the books because the electorate will not accept what needs to be done. If you want balanced books then you have to take control away from the general population because they will not vote for it by themselves.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

Fair point DD, but what electorate elect the EU Commission, who have failed all those audits?

If you want to balance the books you have to derail the gravy train. As the people responsible for the books are happily chugging along on said train, they have no reason to even slow it down, never mind derail it.
          Just saying like.

I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong!

They are appointed by the elected leaders of the member states and approved by elected MEPs. And they are paid to "think european" so to speak, not to represent their home countries.

The people responsible for the borrowing in member countries were democratically elected. If you want to derail the gravy train you need to make democracy and capitalism work properly together.

Indeed they were democratically elected, however because of how the Euro is constructed they cannot now take the proper consequences for their actions. And because the Euro was not constructed properly the mechanisms are not in place to deal with the problems. So to patch up the problems countries are now having to give away their sovereignty to the Germans. The Germans as I keep saying are more culpable than anyone on this. Remember the Euro effectively wiped out price competition from the southern countries and kept Germany's products competitive under the low value Euro. Then the German banks lent these bankrupt states money, much of which was spent on buying German goods.

There is no good way to construct the Euro. Until there is a sovereign Europe. Floating currencies work best.

One could also argue that the € was constructed properly because it's leading to a sovereign Europe.
