Techy : You need to map an M drive.

Suity : OK, can't see where you're going with this I'm afraid.
Techy : All our tns files are on the m drive.

Suity : Ah right ok, sure. Trust me this tns file is pucker. Just copied from the server. It works. I can prove it working.
Techy : Like I say you need to map the m drive.

Suity : Will this miraculously fix your dns problems?
    Techy : Pardon?

Suity : Just give me the ip address of your frakkin dns servers

If you can prove it's working elsewhere why not use that machine to do the DNS lookup and transfer the IP address to your local hosts file?

Temporary fix. What happens when the ip address changes.

A temporary fix is probably better than making a fool of yourself though isn't it.

If you do the lookup on the server then (after a fashion) you will know a) the address of the oracle server b) the address of the DNS servers that the server that you can connect from is using, which is what you are asking for and c) whether the oracle server's address is in the DNS at all. If it isn't b) won't help you anyway.

You can then implement a suitable configuration on your client and move on to the next step of finding out whether there is a firewall in your way.

But that would be 'being proactive'???

Better to come here and whinge about it.

Hacktually this is what I did, but it is just a dirty hack.

Who's the numpty here? Me trying to get on surrounded by numpties? Shirley not.

An a dev lan of this scale, more often than you'd think.
