Nah, I'm talking about home computers and laptops.

You have obviously not had the hassle of smuggling computer kit into the home in the face of opposition by the lady of the house.
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

I don't poke around in the server room. If I need to access a server I do it remotely, from my Macbook Pro. If you're using something everyday it's worth paying a bit extra for something that's nice to use.

I have a very attractive Vaio laptop, and a death defyingly ugly DELL server, and a few other things I have laying about that I have forgotten about. More distressingly, especially given the context of my argument here, is that the bearer of my 3 darling children wants an iPad for them, and an iMac for her and we all know the direction of these kinds of discussions...

            Aye.

It were all green fields around here back then.
From the bookshelf, a rather dogeared copy of Byte from November 1988, featuring the NeXT cube: Steve Jobs' new "machine for the '90s" (linked to full-size 17MB scan):

I remember reading that review in a freezing cold waiting room at Birmingham New Street in the early hours of a Sunday morning as my girlfriend kipped on the floor. We'd been to Nottingham for the day. After a rather long evening in the Salutation we both fell asleep on the last train home and ended up, much against our wishes, in Brum

Of course the NextStep OS from that machine lives on as Cocoa in the current OS X and iOS, as evidenced by the number of classes whose name begins NS

It turns your boys gay, sorry I meant "artistic"!

Fair enough, can't argue with that.

I can see they look good, I was conned with the 3Gs and I thought it very poor; stayle over substance, especially compared to HTC etc.

But, for me, the main issue they don't do, what I need them to do. In my industry, Flex/Flash is used quite a bit, so anything I buy, has to be able to do certain things. There are other issues, but mainly, I don't think they're better.

I had the same thing for a while. I was doing more .Net back then so it didn't make any sense to get a Mac. Now I'm doing less .Net and I have Windows 7 as a dual boot/virtual machine so I've got that covered. I also wanted to try some iPhone app development so the Mac suddenly became the more sensible option.

Our next computer will be a MAC and I'll do the dual boot/VM thingy.
