How about a W202 chassis C36 or C43 AMG Merc? Even the C230 Kompressor is a bit of a hoot (I got one for her ladyship to replace a VW Golf that burnt to death). You should be able to pick up a very good AMG one for sub £5k and the C230K are no more than £2K. Much fun!

I've been keeping my eye on VXR8 prices and they're still pretty much the same as this time last year (over 15k), despite petrol price rises and gas guzzlers generally tanking in price, and the last of the stock being sold off at a massive discount (~£22k against a list price of ~£35k IIRC).

There's only ever under 30 for sale on Autotrader so maybe there's still enough enthusiast demand for these to be pretty much depreciation proof.

I think it may be a modern classic in the making, taking the crown from the Lotus Carlton.

Last of the affordable 6 litre V8s?

A little over the £10K budget, but perhaps a CLK55 AMG?

What are servicing and parts costs like for AMGs?

One thing I like the VXR8 over more expensive to run alternatives (BMW M series, Audi S and RS series) are that the dealer visits should be more reasonable, according to owner reports.

Buying a second hand luxury car can be the cheapest part of ownership!

The good thing about owning older BMW and AMG cars is there are lots of specialist garages to service them, usually costs less than half the main dealer bills.

Isn't there still a tax on parts for these sporty models, regardless of where you go for servicing?

e.g. I seem to remember the cost of new brake pads and discs on an Audi RS were significantly more than on a non-RS sporty Audi, despite them being pretty much the same part.

As such, I think those recommending the 335 over an M3 (or a 540 over an M5) may have a point. You get 90% the same car but maybe 75% of the running costs.

When you find a real Vauxhall Carlton for £10k do let me know. the last one I saw was over 20K.
Same for Cosworth models they are past the chav phase and are now sort after so a good one is not in your price range...

Mercedes V8's are awesome and yes the AMG is the top of the bunch. The running costs can be interesting but to be honest you are a contractor running a super-car so stop bitching. If you want 4 seats I'd look out for a low mileage cl55 over a CLK though.

                  All this for about £13K

Neighbours will think it cost twice that.

I really fancy the non-cabrio clk55 myself. However after a bit of research, it appears they were only galvanised since 2004 so dont get a < 2004 unless you like having a scabby car.

I also like the look of the C32. Looks very boring admitedly, but 350bhp should be good fun and you can pick up good onces for 6-8k.

Get yourself a bike. Could get a nearly new Fireblade for that.

Cars are for gays and ladies (unless its an early XJS, which is acceptable).
