Its the $79 one except for the fact it displays adverts and so doesn't have the $30-40 subsidy the $79 one has (see the amazon.com website for details).

I'm guessing there are plenty of keyboard kindles remaining and they need to be sold in the UK prior to the touchscreen ones being sold.

I take it you mean it's the US's $79 one, except that the UK one doesn't display ads, rather than that the UK one is £30 more and has ads.

The equivalent non-advert version in the US is more like $110 based on other things I read.
But - WE DON'T LIVE IN THE USA.

TW is it you who likes camping in a ditch or am I mixing you with someone else? Compared with an iPod/iPad, a Kindle is far superior for holidays because it will run for weeks. For camping, that actually sounds pretty wonderful - lying under a tree reading.

I use my iPod Touch for more than reading. Reading is a small part of it's usefulness while abroad. Web (have even used it to book flights while abroad), email, watching video (albeit rare), audio books (often), playing games, running apps. The new Kindle Fire may run close as an iPod killer, but not the old ones.

As I wasn't clear above the £89 is the $109 (ad free) version of the $79 (with adverts) version. So that is probably about right once you add VAT and import duties.

I've ended up with both a kindle and an ipad as both serve very different purposes (the kindle is great for reading books, the ipad great for browsing.....).

Yes. Amazon are selling them off as refurbished for £79:

Amazon.co.uk: Used and New: Kindle Keyboard, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display

They were £67 a few weeks ago (when I got mine). These are not used, come as new in a sealed box.

They only come with a USB cable which is also used for charging via PC. Non-Amazon power outlet USB charger plugs are only a few quid if you need one.

As the new version is only a tenner more if pre-ordered, this is only really worth considering if you want to save the tenner, get it now, or need the keyboard (only useful for annotations). The new version looks like it retains the most useful buttons, for navigation and setting alterations (handy for changing orientation from portrait to landscape).

It's a loss leader to get you to buy music, movies (remember Amazon UK own lovefilm) and e-books.

So they're trying to do an iTunes/iPad type lock-in.

Can the device be used with non-Amazon sourced content, or will that require someone to jailbreak it?

                  Cat set amongst the pigeons:

Kindle Fire may force Android tablet makers to cut prices | Reuters

Not due here until after Chrimbo though? (and another version due out shortly after according to the rumour mill).

But you can't read it in direct sunlight...

People keep going on about IPad v Kindle but they have two completely different selling point. Kindle you can read books in bright sunlight, Ipad you can't. End of comparison. The fact that IPad does other things is not a reason people would make a choice. One is a tablet, the other a book reader. Really annoys me when people try compare them.

I have both and the Kindle is f*ing ace to read books on for all 4 of us in the family and yes we read alot of books on holiday. Worth every penny and the rest. The IPad does what is is marketed to do very well as well. Neither of them do anything the other is supposed to do. If you want the best you have to get both.

Personally I think the Kindle Fire is a bit of disaster if they drop the unique selling point they had with e-ink but we will see.

That's why I think they should have dropped the Kindle brand from these tablets. I'm sure some people will think it's new colour e-ink tech as I've noticed a few reports already that could construe that to the uninformed.

In reality these are just another branded android tablet. Nothing special. I expect the price to be the usual 1:1 between dollar and pound. e.g. reports say it will be $199 in the USA and therefore possibly £130 in the UK. Yeah right.
