I believe (can't be arsed to check) that Eire has much stricter rules and squatting is illegal. A sensible law that should be implemented here. It is incredible how deliberate theft of our highest value assets has been allowed to go on for so long.bloggoth

Best collected via site fees I assume. The problem would be council tax. Would they pay £1500 per caravan?bloggoth

I wonder if that law is a remenant from English occupation and wealthy land owners wanting to keep any displaced Irish peasants off their land.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostI believe (can't be arsed to check) that Eire has much stricter rules and squatting is illegal. In simple terms -Originally posted by Paddy View PostNo. Please tell me.
Phenotype is what you look like which is what you were talking about when you said the Romany Gypsies where darked skinned though knowing people of Indian heritage in the UK a few of them especially the higher Hindu caste groups who are in the UK aren't.
Genotype is your genetic make up. Humans are all very similar genetically which is why lots of scientists don't believe in race. Race and ethnicity are often argued to be social concepts."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

In the case of Dale Farm one of the travellers owns the land and as you can't squat on your own land or call people you have invited to live on the land squatters, changing that law wouldn't make a difference.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostI believe (can't be arsed to check) that Eire has much stricter rules and squatting is illegal. Quite true but citing another problem does not make the first go away.In the case of Dale Farm one of the travellers owns the land
On previous, I reckon all this stuff about race in any context is largely irrelevant. Problems are not really caused by racial difference but by cultural, national or belief ones. Most conflicts in the world have been between people of the same race, us vs the French or lefties vs righties for example. Where race is cited it's more because a particular race is associated with a culture or a belief different to our own.Last edited by xoggoth; 23 September 2011, 09:46.bloggoth

The fundamental issue here is that the vast majority of "Travellers" have no respect whatsoever for the rule of law and don't care whose law it is, they use the racism card to hide behind. Before anyone jumps on me I do have first hand experience with them !Comment

Quite. Imagine the outcry if all residents of Dale Farm jumped the queue for council houses.Originally posted by xoggoth View PostIn principal there ought to be more sites for travellers, provision surely must cost less than council houses and they certainly take up less room. In theory, if they are proper sites, they are supposed to pay council tax and get refuse collection etc so not the problems of rubbish etc as with illegal sites.
There are three main points/problems they need to address I reckon. a) If many are Irish or other foreign nationals (can't find any stats) why should the UK be bearing that cost? b) Crime. Not sure if they are any worse than those of similar low income but certainly higher than well off areas they may stay in, so one can see why the locals resent them c) Education. Among the lowest acheivers in the country. Not a great asset for local schools to get a continual turnover of these kids.Comment
