Heathrow is hardly a good example of Britain. Its designed to rip off tourists and those business men too stupid to drive 5 miles elsewhere.

I agree. However most cities I visit welcome you, London tends to bring out the worst in me with it's two finger salute to prices. I bet tourism drops plenty in the years ahead.

As for planning, I thought I made a good choice. Now this is apparently the hotel I stayed at:

Heathrow Airport Hotels - Thistle London Heathrow

How does that compare to the pictures I took?

Had you stayed at the Sofitel you would have been similarly underwhelmed. I stayed there earlier in the year and it was no more than average in every facet except pricing. Thankfully it was all expensed.
