Depends how urgent something is.
Seeing a lot of instant messaging use these days as it offers best of both worlds. Instant and recordable/searchable. Can also have several isolated conversations at once.
Glad that Google Wave crap died on it's arse though. Being able to see a response as it is typed is not always a good idea, especially when replying to a cretin who has cocked something up and the red mist is descending.
