It surprises people, but when you get right at the heart of the Orange Order, they are a deeply religious order. These people at the root of the organisation are your fire and brimstone god botherers. Just as long as they aren't of the Roman Catholic type.

Most of the lads on my bus go to church regularly, the whole brotherhood of Christianity is lost on them though.

        I can imagine!

We had an ol' one Sr Monica, she smelt of wee. All the time.

We had a Sr Ellen as head nun at primary school, she used to be Sr Malachy when she taught my Dad - I'm not sure if she thought changing her name to Ellen would make her a nicer person, but it didn't work. She was as scary for me as she was for him

I like the name 'Malachy'. My kind of saint.

Isn't there a Catholic version anyway, Knights of Saint someone or other, I'm not too sure, I'll have to google it.

            There's a few:

They have parades in Glasgow as well, don't know who it is marching though.

Yeah, I think it's the Columba one I'd heard of. I'll have a read, thanks.

They don't accept Roman Catholic as Chrisitian. They see them as idolators through their veneration of Mary and the other saints.

Going back to the Boyne... it's interesting in a historical context because the Orange Order and the last gasps of the dissident Republicans can be seen as the final flickers of the European religious wars of the early 17th century.

I am always amused when people try to partition Irish Republicanism along sectarian lines. There are a huge number of very influential Protestants that wholeheartedly supported the notion over the centuries that must be spinning in their graves at some of that thinking.

                      Wolfe Tone...
