If you have a fair bit of money, and a few loyal and competent retainers, and opponents whose detection methods rely almost entirely on tracking the use of gadgets which you can forego, it's easy to avoid detection if you simply go to ground and don't move around much.

So, given that Osama was fairly wealthy, had devoted support, and was as cunning as a weasel, it's no surprise the Yanks or their allies could hardly clock any trace of him for years. I don't buy the idea that the West "knew where he was all along, but left him alone" for their own devious purposes.

P.S. Saddam Hussein notwithstanding, survival manuals are unanimous that being constantly on the move makes one much more vulnerable in all kinds of ways - Refugees are hostages to fortune.

      Quiet.

You just buy super expensive mansion that stands out and completely ignore telephone and internet, and to be sure you are safe securely dispose of garbage by burning it - something nobody else around does.

Bin Laden sure made mistake by living in a building that was owned by people who were known to be close to him...

I think you'll find 'Chris Ryan' would disagree with you on that one.
"I hope Celtic realise that, if their team is good enough, they will win. If they're not good enough, they'll not win - and they can't look at anybody else, whether it is referees or any other influence." - Walter Smith

On a somewhat similar theme: Wired writer Evan Ratliff Tried to Vanish: Here’s What Happened.

Erm, I hate to be doubting Thomas amid the widespread jubilation, but considering the only 'photographic evidence' has now been discredited; where's the proof that he's actually dead?
