I've been driving over that road, from the Manchester end to Halifax for years, on and off. It's just a stretch of motorway that goes a bit high. Like any other road, if it's icy, you slow down a bit. No need to panic here

I hope both truckers are unscathed, but pretty crazy stuff.

I was there. It was the craziest accident I have seen in years. Both the trucks were smoldering as I drove past.

Just another day on the M62..... and as if my 125 mile daily commute isn't stressful enough...

It's why I turned down an interesting contract 20 years ago, when I could have really done with the work.

I did it going the other way for two years. A1 to Leeds via M62 and M621. Traffic was horrendous most days. The only reason there wern't more accidents is that most of the time it wasn't moving anyway.

Interviewd for another Gig in Leeds this morning, will be taking the train for this one if I get it.

Could well be. It was the thought of getting sandwiched between trucks that always scared the willies out of me. I rented a Polo one Christmas and on my way back to Manchester airport the thing couldn't do more than 50 mph against the prevailing gale on the tops.

That train is no express, but I once did a 2 week course in Manchester and commuting by train really wasn't so bad.

Yeah, under powered cars are a death trap* but with the direction the manufacturers are going to satisfy the emission/safety regs it's getting worse. Piddly little engines with piddly turbos in heavy cars. Great for doing 40mpg+ but horrid for overtaking or getting up to motorway speeds, or maintaining them on big hills as you found.

                    * Last year there was a nurse killed on her way to work on a perfectly straight and clear (no side roads for about 2 miles) A road near me. Looks like she went to overtake and her car didn't have the power to get past before the truck coming the other way smashed into her. She was in a typical 1.2 litre 'birds car' if I remember right. She'd probably still be alive if she'd been in a faster car or realised how long it takes to overtake in such a slow car.

Something that could also be aided with technology. A simple laser distance measuring device to say if you have enough time to overtake before the oncoming traffic gets to you, activated when you do that 'pull out slightly to check if the road is clear' manouver. Now that would be useful.
