Yeah, under powered cars are a death trap* but with the direction the manufacturers are going to satisfy the emission/safety regs it's getting worse. Piddly little engines with piddly turbos in heavy cars. Great for doing 40mpg+ but horrid for overtaking or getting up to motorway speeds, or maintaining them on big hills as you found.
* Last year there was a nurse killed on her way to work on a perfectly straight and clear (no side roads for about 2 miles) A road near me. Looks like she went to overtake and her car didn't have the power to get past before the truck coming the other way smashed into her. She was in a typical 1.2 litre 'birds car' if I remember right. She'd probably still be alive if she'd been in a faster car or realised how long it takes to overtake in such a slow car.
Something that could also be aided with technology. A simple laser distance measuring device to say if you have enough time to overtake before the oncoming traffic gets to you, activated when you do that 'pull out slightly to check if the road is clear' manouver. Now that would be useful.
