Never thought of The Ritz but it seems booked up on the web at least That would have been a great way to earn points!

Question: booking a hotel in London is it worth waiting until the week we are visiting and finding a deal, or booking as early as possible? All these sites like LastMinute.com seem to have turned into generic booking sites now rather than specialising in last-minute deals... with so many hotels in London surely the odds are we can find something the day before. Anyone got any advice?
The eye is good, I've been a couple of times in the day and after dark.

I can't really comment on the hotels as I live there, but I would expect to be paying £100 a night for somewhere decent and central. You might get a better price on somewhere more business focused in the city or canary wharf.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

      £100.

      It's 2011 not 1911. It's London mate, expect to pay £200

Eye is good. Though I haven't been a night, and didn't pay for queue beating as I'm a mean Londoner.

I actually managed to go on a clear day so had fun making out all the landmarks I know.

Personally I would try and get on at sunset rather than night as at least you can take good photos.

          WHS

£100 = Travel lodge type of place or nasty B&B

And has anyone used LastMinute's "top secret hotel" feature? Makes me worried the hotel is nowhere near anywhere I want to be. Is it trustworthy?
Yep and it's been fine. My sis has also used it so I know it wasn't just that I got lucky. They tend to be accurate discriptions IMO.

Thanks CM. It seems a weird scheme still... prices so low the hotel don't want anyone to know.

From a few searches it seems low £100s for 3-4* is achievable but closer to £200 is more normal. Bah. Going to keep an eye on late deals and Groupon.

                  My thought exactly.

                  The Eye
                  Tussauds
                  Tower of London
St Pauls>Tate Modern>Waterloo>Westminster>Whitehall>Traf Sq>Leicester Sq>Piccadilly Circus is a nice walk with lots to see.

My wife went and saw the new Wizard of Oz musical and she really enjoyed it, unusual as she doesn't normally go for musicals.

                  When in doubt Timeout London.

If you are heading towards St Paul's Cathedral, I cannot recommend highly enough The Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice in Postman's Park. Postman's Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the late Roman Temple of Mithras, also in the City: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Mithraeum

Have a look on venere.com. Prices will be in euros but I find they are often a bit cheaper than the usual UK sites.

You could also look at "less touristy" areas e.g. maida vale, st johns wood, rather than bayswater / paddington / mayfair / bloomsbury.
