Requirements - needs to be able to accomodate two adults and car seat for a three year old (and the three year old).

Should be more use in the conditions if we get any more snow but doesn't need to be 4wd.

    My requirements -
Excellent ride, reasonably brisk, nice to drive. Must have xenon(HID) headlights and heated seats. Proper ipod integration or ability to replace the stereo fairly easily.
    Not a BMW.

    Her requirements -
Auto trans (I can probably get around this), heated seats
Not a Seat, Skoda or Mazda (or probably Toyota or Honda if seh thinks about it)
Better fuel economy than her Disco 3
Not embarrasing for her to turn up at work in
Doesn't have a new random fault every week like my current Jag.
    Less than 4 years old

Budget - to about 19K on a good day.
Benz C Class or E Class diesel estate; fine on the snow if you have winter tyres. Once you're used to it, rear wheel drive is actually easier to correct on a slippery surface, and the E-Class is very forgiving n that sense.

No worries. I am in similar situation although my youngest is 2 and have had my eye on one of these, unfortunately I think it comes from the same shed as the jag (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I think you're broadly right, not sure who owns what at the moment, but pretty certain that both Jag and Volvo were Ford owned a few years back.

          How about a Lexus saloon?

          Used Lexus IS 250 2.5 SE-I 600931203 - Chester

          Auto, fairly luxurious inside.

Saab 9-3 convertible. Can get Auto, good interior, space for 4 adults.

Without winter tyres you ain't going nowhere.

I saw dozens of abandoned Mercs this last winter.

                And BMW's too.

Buy Which or What Car and look to see what they recommend in the class of car you are after. Then avoid.

As for headlights - you can get a pair of Philips Xenon bulbs to replace the standard fitment that are nearly as bright as HiD without the £750 cost.

Those Lexus are tiny inside. Once the kiddy got older than 3 they'd struggle. And that website says 31mpg. I couldn't afford the fuel for that. My thoroughly unglamorous (but huge inside space) Skoda Superb 2.5TDi does just over 48mpg on my weekly commute to/from Surrey.
