Both the cliched right-winger "flog em, let the feckless get jobs" Daily mail brigade and the equally tired left-winger "lets help them up the ladder" posts on this thread are totally missing the point.

There are no jobs and no ladder to climb anymore.
Due to successive waves of incompetent politicians of all political stripes and a misguided, naive and simple view of the free market, Britain's national cake is now too small for its population.

    HTH
    Hard Brexit now!

I could bake a nice carrot cake if it helps.

If I can find them in the shops. I could put a couple of interesting mushrooms in too.

I'll get the five loaves and the fish.

Hmmmm, we're gonna need a bigger fish.

Not to mention, the NE needs its diversity officers
Seeing about 95% of the population of Newcastle are white, I don't think we need very many.

And you're talking tulipe about the pay. The public sector here pays very well indeed, infact if someone here has a nice house and a nice new car, you know for a fact they are a public sector worker.

God knows how many people work in the council offices at Cobalt Park, but when they all finish work (at 4.00pm on the dot), the roads are completely congested with them! Makes the chinese army look short of staff.

Not any more in the UK; volunteers get viewed as paedos, innit? Who wants to put themselves in line for that crap?

On the contrary, I would say you need more diversity officers to encourage more "enrichment" in your area

You really are ignorant of the poorer areas of the country. Someone has to create those jobs, it's not an inexhaustible supply.

I bet there aren't many of those round here. Plus I bet you made those numbers up or exaggerated for effect. According to the BBC less than 200 civil servants in the whole country earn more than the PM's £140k. BBC News - Government reveals 172 civil servants earn more than PM

PETERBOROUGH City Council’s statement of accounts for 2009/10 show the top earners are:

Chief executive, Gillian Beasley: £172,175 total remuneration (plus £19,875 in pension contributions). Has overall responsibility for the council’s 7,716 staff and £420 million budget.

Executive director of strategic resources, John Harrison: £121,779 (plus £19,875 in pension contributions). Responsible for the council’s financial affairs, waste strategy, council tax, benefits and £360 million of council buildings and assets.

Executive director of operations, Paul Philipson: £91,877 (plus £15,017 in pension contributions). Responsible for frontline services with a £50 million budget. Manages 380 staff. He also manages Travelchoice and looks after highways, neighbourhoods and housing.

Executive director of children’s services, John Richards: £138,308 (plus £22,683 in pension contributions). Leads children’s services for the 42,000 youngsters in the city and is responsible for 1,000 staff.

Director of commercial services, Mike Heath: £93,987 (plus £15,000 in pension contributions). Duties include running city services with a budget of £25 million and 720 staff.

Executive director of adult social services, Denise Radley: £110,458 (plus £18,079 in pension contributions). Manages NHS budgets of £297 million.

Solicitor to the council, Helen Edwards: £90,679 (plus £14,813 in pension contributions). Ensures council operates legally and to high standards of conduct.
