It wasn't long ago that newspapers were black and white, apart from the odd page. The change to colour started in the mid 1980s in the UK according to the Wiki, with the majority of newspapers still mostly black and white today.
Whether you want colour in your newspaper depends upon whether you buy it for the news, or the pictures.
Not only PDF but .doc and even .docx, and they'll even convert to a more conveniently formatted Kindle doc - you email the file to your kindle and it happens by magic.
Can you download PDF files onto them, or are they restricted to chargeable/encrypted ebooks?
PDF and other formats that have been mentioned - and there are shedloads of free books, either out-of-copyright at Project Gutenberg and similar repositories, or newly-created such as this collection of shared knowledge from Stack Overflow's (Creative Commons licensed) content pool.
I always thought the same, I dislike reading on a PC screen. But I find my Kindle remarkably easy to read and tend to forget I'm reading an e-book.

I'm always surprised how quickly non-techy people are interested within moments of seeing the Kindle, about the way the screen looks. Typical response "ooh, it's like looking at a book!"
