You can't always do that though - On my laptop, running Windows XP Proessional (bought it a few months before Windows 7 was out) had a copy protection feature that prevented me copying the VOB files from two or three DVDs I bought at MVC in Oxford Street just before Christmas.

I don't mind the trailers too much - My big bugear is region codes (although I suppose those just mean having to buy a DVD player for each region).

Oh I strip the region coding nonesense off too.

DVD Decrypter is what allows me to pull all the VOB files off the DVD, I've used the app on XP and then later Win7.

Also: the advert at the beginning of films in the cinema, congratulating you for coming to the cinema instead of buying a pirate DVD taken by somebody in a cinema with a camcorder, because in such DVDs your view might be obscured by people in the row ahead, like it is in the cinema.

Agreed. You've paid for your copy so they are preaching to the choir. It would make more sense to stick these ads on the pirated DVDs.

Does it have the option of removing the region encoding?

Shrink emplies encoding double layer to single layer, I think. Is it possible to have the necessary files on the hard drive and play from there (and backup of course)?

If I ripped my own legally bought DVDs, could I also then cram them onto writable blu-rays to avoid having a whole bookshelf full of box-sets? BR disks store 6X as much AFAIK so most boxsets would then fit on a single disk. I never found anyone selling DVD-quality on a BR to conserve space, to me it's a great idea.
